Fetal duck egg -

Aha. Are we talking about one of the most Vietnamese creepy dishes? Well, I would say that almost every Vietnamese finds it normal! Indeed, "trứng vịt lộn" is our much-loved dish.

You might find it a bit similar to:

  • Balut (Philippines)
  • Pong tea khon (Cambodia)
  • Khai Luk (Thailand, Laos)

If you are not a Vietnamese, the idea of eating a baby duck egg would probably freak you out. Everywhere in Vietnam, people consider eating “ trứng vịt lộn” is completely normal (and tasty, of course!). Some people (not me) believe that this dish can help them to get rid of unfortunate luck. Are you feeling unlucky? Challenge yourself to eat “trứng vịt lộn”! An odd number can bring you good luck (choose to eat 1,3,5,7,9…eggs). After eating, the egg shell must be crushed.

What make our “trứng vịt lộn” different from other countries? We always have it with “rau răm” - our unique “Vietnamese coriander” which has a wonderful spicy flavor with hints of cilantro.

where to try it: This is a streetfood. You can easily find it almost every city/town/village across the country. Simply look for the word: "trứng vịt lộn"! People who live in the South call it "hột vịt lộn". Another way to cook this dish is to stir-fry it with tamarind sauce, which is called "trứng vịt lộn rang me". (Please note that this one contains peanut) I prefer this one much more than the boiled one. So Yummy!

Now, dare yourself to go and find a "trứng vịt lộn", eat it! Then you become a hero!
