Finding a good place to run in Saigon is not easy at all even though you are locals or tourists. An ideal running place must have many factors such as safety (less traffic), shade (many trees), utilities (toilets and water selling places). How difficult to find a place like that!

With my experience over 4 years, I would like to recommend to you some places that I claim are ideal for running.

Located in the city center, The Independence Palace is an ideal running place for those who live in District 1, District 3 and for tourists as well. This is my very favorite destination since it’s near my company and I can come either before work or after work. Although I’m not working in District 1 anymore, I always keep up my habit of running here each morning.

Locating: Nam Ky Khoi Nghia Street, District 1, HCMC

Running distance: 1,500m a round

Advantage: flat running route, less people

Disadvantage: no public toilet, much vehicle waste after 8:00am

It is more exciting and more crowded than The Palace. People come here all day and night for jogging, dancing, Zumba exercise, and working out. Sometimes you will meet a couple of runners who are struggling to avoid walkers on the road.

I rarely run here because it is so crowded. I just want to come when The Palace get too boring, and I want to change the environment, then I come back to The Palace.

To enjoy running on a trail in the center of Saigon, there is no place better than Phu Tho Racing Ground. It is more interesting on rainy days with a muddy experience provided for you.

Locating: Ly Thuong Kiet Street, District 11, HCMC

Distance: 1,800m a round

Advantage: wide road, different experience, toilet nearby, food and drink stores nearby Disadvantage: no tree, no shade, hot and muggy in the sun, your shoes will get dirty.

If you worry about your shoes, move to Phu Tho Stadium. It is located next to the Racing Ground.

The road here is quite comfortable. Widely flat and easy to run. The road is surfaced with cement, so that it is not muddy in rainy season. Pedestrians are mainly middle-aged uncles. In some corners, many groups practice fan dance, shaking their hips, just like what I often see in Tao Dan Park.

Dam Sen Park is quite far from the city center. But it is very comfortable and relaxing when running here. They grow man trees which makes the road cooler in the hot weather. Toilet systems are everywhere. There are at least 3 toilets installed along the road running around the lake.

However, you have to buy an entrance ticket (5,000VND per person), and time for exercising is limited. You are not allowed to stay here after 6:30am and they stop selling ticket at 6am. There is no water store in the park, so if you run more than 45 minutes, remember to bring your own water bottle. You can leave it at a tree, nobody will takes it.

Locating: Hoa Binh Street, District 11, HCMC

Distance: 1400m a round

Advantage: wide and shady road, cool atmosphere

Disadvantage: entrance ticket 5,000VND, limited time (before 6:30), no food and drink store nearby.

I fell in love during my first run in Le Van Tam Park. The roads looked very comfortable and clean. It was a green park with lots of trees so it is still cool when running here on hot days. Le Van Tam became my favorite place to hide from the sun when I wanted to run at noon.

Another reason why I love this park is that there are many runners around. They give me more energy and motivation to run further. Not like running at Phu Tho Racing Ground or Tao Dan Park, where there was no one running with me.

No worries, it’s a walking street but you can run here. The ideal time for running at Nguyen Hue is early morning. The road is flat and comfortable. There are less people so that you can speed up easily. I finished 17km in one morning on this street. What a wonderful experience!

The overall feeling of running along the banks of the canal is very refreshing. In the canal, there are a lot of fish. It is interesting watching the fish, watching the sky and watching the vehicles while running. The road here is not wide, but there are less people, so you can run freely and don’t have to worry about avoiding people. However, some parts of the road don’t smell so good, I had to hold my breath while passing them. I began my trip at the corner of Le Binh – Hoang Sa Street (Tan Binh District), then ran all along Hoang Sa Street and finished at Dien Bien Phu Bridge (District 1) and then headed back following Truong Sa Street. My trip exploring Nhieu Loc Canal finished after 2 hours running. It took 2 water bottles, 2 packs of Energy Gel and a liter of sweat.

Advantage: less people, nice view along the canal

Disadvantage: some parts don’t smell good

Among the locations above, only at Dam Sen Park you are required to buy entrance tickets. The remaining points are free for everyone.

There are also many small parks in the city that you can come and run in at any time. No matter where you run, it's important to have motivation and goals for your training. Any place can be turned into a running spot if you know how to take advantage of it.
